Teacher Charlie Voorhees had help installing a new CNC router Tuesday at Batavia High School. The school has been working feverishly to improve the opportunities available to students by making some major upgrades, Batavia City School District officials said in a news release. Learning about and operating tools of the trades is something Voorhees hopes will continue to grow. Batavia HS CNC Unit. Support came from the school’s community neighbors, district officials said.
Tim Wolcott and Howard Wilson from Amada Tool arrived at the school to advise and lend a hand with the installation.
Amada Tool — located in Batavia — is a manufacturer with over 50 years of experience, district officials said. The company serves markets such as aerospace, air conditioning, electronics, medical equipment and much more.
Amada Tool uses machinery such as CNC routers daily, district officials said.
Voorhees is looking forward to all the projects his students will be able to produce with the new machine — anything from signs, to Adirondack chair, to specialized parts for robots for Tech Wars.
Voorhees and his class won first place in the 2024 Tech Wars competition, and the new machine is opening up all sorts of possibilities to the class, district officials said.
Wolcott and Wilson participated because they are excited about the possibility of prospective employees getting the chance to use tools and machines early on, district officials said. Getting the devices in the hands of students now can foster an interest in the field, and that interest can lead to careers later.
The CNC router purchase was possible through a donation from Genesee County Economic Development Center. District officials said the school is grateful it has community members who care enough to share their expertise for the students’ benefit.
